I create my quilts in series.  This gives me the opportunity to explore many elements of the creative process, delving further into specific techniques, concepts and design perspectives.  The last two years I’ve focused on two series; stitched paintings and improvisational quilts.  Of course, I also get the urge to create pieces with other techniques and ideas, or I may just need an excuse to play for a day.  These you will find on my “most recent” page.

Stitched Paintings

This series explores the idea that art mirrors the artist’s feelings and thoughts as they create.  Each piece starts as a mark making exercise, layering black and white paint until an idea emerges.  Once I begin to see something in the painting, I work to bring it forward in the design in order to strengthen my attempts at communicating with the viewer.  I feel as if the painting itself is guiding me through the creative journey.

The painting is only the beginning of my journey.  The emphasis in my work is created with thread.  With stitching I can either mimic the strokes I’ve made with paint or I can choose to create additional design.  As a fiber artist, I believe the stitching is what brings each piece to life.  Stitching gives the work  texture, depth and creates a statement that is uniquely my own.

Improvisational Quilts

The techniques I use to create these quilts are improvisational.  Each cut is freehand without the use of rulers or templates.  I begin these quilts by letting my intuition guide me.  Colors, shapes and sizes of individual fabrics come about as a response to narratives or emotions from the stories I’m trying to tell.

All of the fabrics used in this series are hand dyed.  I dye fabrics in a variety of ways, but for this series I prefer to use my fabrics that are semi-solid colored in nature.  There are some variations in the fabrics and many people comment that they look like suede.
